AWARE (Aiding Women in Abuse & Rape Emergencies)

Who We Are

Aiding Women in Abuse and Rape Emergencies (AWARE) provides a variety of confidential and free prevention and intervention services for women and children impacted by domestic violence and/or sexual assault. We also work to raise community awareness regarding these issues.

All of our services are confidential and free of charge. This includes:

Emergency Safe Shelter
AWARE provides safe shelter to women and children who have had to leave home or relocate due to domestic violence, sexual assault and/or child abuse. If you need emergency shelter, please call 586-1090 to speak with an advocate.

Crisis Intervention - 24 Hour Crisis Line 1-800-478-1090 or in Juneau 586-1090
Trained AWARE advocates answer a 24-hour crisis line (586-1090 in Juneau, 1-800-478-1090 toll-free in Alaska) for victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault. We are also available on-call to accompany women during sexual assault forensic exams and other medical emergencies.

Advocacy Services
AWARE advocates have been trained to respond to domestic violence and sexual assault emergencies to provide support and information. An AWARE advocate is a person who has been trained to respond to domestic violence and sexual assault emergencies. An advocate's primary concern is assisting a victim and her children to develop a plan for immediate and long-term safety.

Community Education to Schools and Community Agencies
AWARE offers educational presentations to local school and community agencies. Please call AWARE at 586-6623 to request a presentation at your school or agency. An AWARE advocate can present on domestic violence, sexual assault, AWARE services, safe/unsafe touch, and/or other related topics. We will adjust our presentation to fit the audience (children, teens or adults).

Legal Advocacy to Help Protect You and Your Children
AWARE's legal advocates can assist you in filing for a protective order, address your divorce or custody situations, and more.  While we do not have attorneys on staff, we do have advocates trained in legal matters related to our mission.  We also provide free legal clinics once a month and work closely with Alaska Legal Services.

Education and Support Groups for Women and Children
AWARE staff facilitate weekly education and support groups for women and children. Women and children do not need to be current residents of AWARE to attend. All groups are confidential and free of charge. Childcare is provided.

Children's Counseling
AWARE provides individual counseling to child victims of sexual assault and/or domestic violence for children ages 3-18.  We provide counseling services in the high schools as well through the Teen Health Center. This counseling is provided free of charge.

PREVENTION Program
AWARE is proud to be a part of the DELTA domestic violence prevention program, funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  We also have a staff team working with community partners, local teens, and other resources to address violence prevention in Alaska.  This includes LeadON! for Peace and Equality, Girls on the Run program, Coaching Boys into Men program, the Juneau Violence Prevention Coalition, and more.

Juneau Choice and Accountability Program (JCAP)
AWARE coordinates the Juneau Choice and Accountability Program (JCAP). JCAP is a multi-session program for male perpetrators of domestic violence.  For more information, contact Lily Schmitz at 523.4942.
